ST. ANDREW'S CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION: Blessings from Heaven since 1911

Founded in 1911 to serve the newly developed West Ghent section of Norfolk, St. Andrew's began its life in a small wooden chapel.  The congregation's first service was held on November 19, 1911, and its first rector, The Rev. Myron Marshall came aboard a few weeks later.  Growth came quickly, and by the end of 1912, the fledgling parish counted more than 100 families as members.  Through the years, St. Andrew's has remained a vibrant parish, combining beautiful worship and music with a desire to engage hearts, minds and hands in making a difference in the surrounding community.

In the fall of 2011, we kicked off a season of celebration to mark our Centennial.  Initial highlights included our 19th Annual Flower Festival (Nov. 4-6), with The Rt. Rev. Holly Hollerith presiding, and a special oral history video presentation and commemoration of the first service (Nov. 20).

Additionally, we are mid-way in a series of special services featuring Virginia Symphony artists as we celebrate a century of sacred music.  The next service in that series comes Sunday, February 26, when we welcome cellist Rebecca Gilmore.  That same morning, The Rev. Charles Joy will kick off our Lenten preaching series featuring former St. Andrew's clergy.

Other upcoming highlights include a festive birthday gala the evening of February 3 and a neighborhood block party the afternoon of April 22.  Also this spring, we will coordinate two special outreach projects:
the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house and the hosting of a Stop Hunger Now meal-packing event.  Special thanks go to the Centennial Steering Committee members, chaired by Steve Herbert and Penny Lewis, who have worked hard to put together such a wonderful program.  See the brochure linked below for more details.
