Community Ministries

The parish office is always a good initial point of contact to learn more about our various church ministries and how you can get involved. Below are brief descriptions of ministries within our parish, along with contact information.

ACCESS AIDS CARE COOK-IN

On the third Sunday of the month, six months of the year, parishioners and others from the community gather at St. Andrews to prepare meals for families affected by HIV/AIDS. Contact Llew Roberts at 423-6310.

AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

St. Andrew's participates with other Ghent-area churches in hosting a bi-monthly blood drive on a rotating schedule.  Click on these links for information on How to Prepare for Donating Blood and Foods Rich in Iron.

SANDWICH MINISTRY

On the Friday before the fourth Saturday of each month, parishioners make and drop off sandwiches for distribution to those who receive food from the Norfolk Catholic Worker. Contact Robin Kruger at 470-9882.

FOODBANK OF SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIA

St. Andrew’s hosts three food and fund drives for our local Foodbank and provide volunteer support. We also sponsor the backpack program that sends food home on weekends to families in need at our neighborhood elementary school, W.H. Taylor Elementary.

HANDS UNITED BUILDING BRIDGES (HUBB)

HUBB is an interfaith and interracial network of local faith leaders and congregations seeking increased local dialogue and understanding around issues of race and religion. More infomation on HUBB can be found on their website.

LAUNDRY LOVE

In partnership with other area churches, we host a monthly ministry to launder the clothes of those in need and build relationships one load at a time.  Contact Penny Lewis at 757-839-9392.

MISSION AND MINISTRY COMMITTEE

This committee oversees our outreach ministry in the community and also determines grant support for local organizations such as Ghent Area Ministries, ForKIDS, the Lost Boys Foundation, Camp Wakonda, and more. Contact Robin Kruger 470-9882.

ODU EPISCOPAL CAMPUS MINISTRY

We support the Episcopal student fellowship at the Canterbury Center at Old Dominion University by providing meals, advising, and financial support throughout the school year.

RISE AGAINST HUNGER 

In the winter/spring of each year, we partner with  Rise Up Aganist Hunger to host a fun event at which we pack 10,000 dry meals to ship to hungry persons around the world. Contact Robin Kruger 470-9882.

SOCIAL JUSTICE AND ADVOCACY

Parishioners participate in nonpartisan advocacy efforts through the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public policy, Bread for the World, and other organizations. Contact Pat Hodge at 622-1429.

SUDANESE REFUGEE MINISTRY

In partnership with Outreach Africa: The Lost Boys Foundation, we provide support each year toward the education and health of Sudanese refugees.
